Upstream Oil and Gas Fundamentals

Learn the fundamental principles, tools, technology and methodologies for finding and managing oil and gas reservoirs. The Exploration & Production process is presented by following the varying stages in the life of a field including: 1) Discovery, 2) Appraisal, 3) Primary drive production (including secondary/tertiary enhanced recovery), 4) Plugging and abandoning (reclamation). This course is ideal for experienced professionals as well as new entrants to the industry seeking to gain a basic understanding of the upstream sector to contribute to team success.

Full Course Description

Special focus on:

  • Petroleum formation and geoscience techniques (the rock cycle, plate tectonics, hydrocarbon generation, source rocks, reservoirs, traps, seals, unconventional resources, seismic and well data).
  • Geologic risk and exploration economics (basin analysis, commerciality / volumetrics, mineral leasing, global oil and gas reserves, national oil companies vs. international oil companies).
  • Appraisal drilling and petrophysics (the appraisal process, reserves and resources definition).
  • Field development decisions and drilling technology (reservoir simulation, risk integration decision modeling, vertical vs. directional wells, hydrofracturing, deepwater drilling).
  • Reservoir engineering (field management principles – oil vs. gas reservoirs, waterflooding, CO2 enhanced oil recovery, heavy oil steamflooding, natural gas and condensate processing).
  • Transportation (pipelines, marine vessels, rail options, liquefied natural gas – LNG).
  • Exploration frontiers (global unconventional vs. conventional recent discoveries and trends).

This course is an excellent introduction to new employees in the upstream industry, introducing them to concepts, terminology and relationships that can take years to learn on their own. People who work on the periphery of the upstream (service companies, suppliers, refiners and pipeliners) will find that these sessions clear up many of the uncertainties and confusions that exist. Investors, analysts and regulators will gain insight into the risks and rewards of the business as well as how to interpret press releases and annual reports that detail significant events in an often-times arcane language.
